"No understanding of consent"

About: Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I visited A&E with my baby. Me and my baby had unnecessary things done to us without consent at previous times at this hospital so I explained to the Dr how important it is that they don't do anything without asking or explaining first. I didn’t think this would be a big deal - but the Dr actually refused! They said most staff don’t work under informed consent and if I wanted to be asked before doing anything that they wouldn’t help us. The argument seemed to be that patients give implied consent just by walking into the hospital.

I was getting upset at this attitude as I have PTSD from being sexually assaulted in a medical setting in the past, my husband and I tried to explain this but he still wouldn’t budge. A nurse came over and said that by insisting on asking the Dr to seek consent before doing anything I was creating barriers and shared inappropriate information about themself.  My husband was trying to get the attention of the nurses from behind the desk and asking them to remove this nurse as she was making the situation so much worse. There were children present and by now the nurse and I were shouting at each other (her defending the Dr’s right to not seek consent before doing anything and me trying to get her to listen to why consent is so important to me). By now I was shaking and crying and clearly looking quite unstable as three nurses were actually laughing at me from behind their desk, I don’t think they realised we could see them.

Whilst all this was going on a Dr asked me to explain the experience that had lead to my ptsd (the sexual assault by Dr’s). This assault has previously been investigated and there are no formal processes going on.  I had already been asked to explain this twice in public areas and couldn’t cope with having to explain this again so refused telling him just to read my notes if he felt he needed to know (he didn’t need to know!)

Unbelievably the Dr at one point said he doesn’t need to discuss my baby’s care with me as my husband was present.

Later a nurse who I think was trying to help came over to talk to me, I think she was trying to be a comfort but she asked questions about the assault which I found triggering.

Overall a traumatic and unacceptable visit, I will never go back to this hospital.
