"My Mum in ward 16"

About: York Hospital / General medicine York Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

Excellent care from the surgical team. Abysmal post operative care in Ward 16 by, what I found to be, uncaring and condescending nursing staff. My mum is on other medication that has to be taken at specific times. I felt that she got her drugs when it suited staff, not when they were needed. It didn't look like they were busy. Most of the time they sat at the Nurses station or in the patient's room discussing TV shows and nights out. I found the Nurses were rude and condescending. My mum is in her 80s but she is clever and certainly not senile. From my experience, everyone on the ward were spoken to as if they were 5 years old. Covid rules were all over the place and changed with a change of shift, so we didn't know whether we were coming or going. However, the worst thing was the attitude of nursing staff. I found this terrible with a few notable exceptions.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. I am very sorry to hear that your mother's experience on Ward 16 was as difficult as you have described, and that you felt the attitude of the nursing staff was so poor.

It is certainly concerning to read that you found the staff uncaring and condescending, and that ward processes like the provision of medication and enforcement of COVID rules appeared inconsistent.

Given the nature of your experience, we would like to examine this issue further, and so I would invite you to contact our PALS team on 01904726262.
