"Torn Bicep Tendon"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Physiotherapy University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

While working out in a gym I felt a sharp pain in my arm which immediately stopped me from working out. I sought help from my doctors who told me i had probably torn my bicpep muscle and to rest it with ice and painkillers. After a week I was still in a lot of pain and restricted movement I seen a couple of physio's who attempted to massage the muscle which gave some temporary relief, but I still had restricted movement and was in quite a bit of pain. After another week I went to the hospital and was seen by a physio in Wishaw hospital Laura who immediately noticed something wasn't right and this was more than a muscle tear. After sending me for xrays the trauma doctor was content for me to go home, however Laura persisted something wasn't right and asked for me to be sent to see a orthopedic consultant at this point after an MRI scan it was discovered I had detached my distal bicep tendon and would require surgery to re-attach.

I think my care in general was pretty much that general care without a great deal of attention to detail, that for the majority of people I seen it was a muscle tear and that was that. If it had not been for the physio at Wishaw hospital Laura my situation would have probably deteriorated and her persistence and care was excellent.

Hi charayw44,

Many thanks for getting in touch to tell us about your recent experience at our A&E department in University Hospital Wishaw. I am sorry to hear you injured your arm lifting weights at the gym which I am sure must be very frustrating for you. Our Advance Practice Physiotherapists, based in A&E are an expert resource for soft tissue injuries and I am delighted to read Laura used her clinical experience and diagnostic skills to determine that the symptoms you presented with were more than a torn bicep's tendon and that, due to her perseverance, you are now on the right track for recovery.

We wish you well in your recovery journey and will pass on your grateful thanks to Laura and the rest of the team.

Kind regards
