"Poor communication with families"

About: Southmead Hospital

My father has been in and out of Southmead several times over toast few months, various wards. I can't fault his actual care but I do have massive problems with the lack of communication with families. There is only me to help my father, and I live 3 hours away, as I explain every time. He won't use mobile phone, so I am reliant on phoning the ward, or them phoning me. Every ward is the same - they don't pick up the phone. I can call 100 times a day and not get through. Eventually I get a message that they are sending him home, so I come racing back to Bristol, but he doesn't come home, and I spend all evening calling, no answer, etc. Just tell families what is going on, please. I don't care if it's a call or an email or a text or what, just don't leave us in the dark for days and expect us to be available to pick up the pieces at moment's notice.

Dear Rachel,

I am sorry to hear that your father has been unwell and has been in hospital. I am also sorry that communication with you as your father's only relative has not been to the standard we would expect. I can appreciate how distressing this has been for you, and if you would like to discuss this matter further, please call me on 0117 414 4567. Yours sincerely, Sue Needs, Complaints Manager.
