"Poor staff attitude and lack of compassion"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My brother was admitted after being involved in an accident resulting in him losing his leg, as if the accident wasn’t stressful enough we found from out experience, the majority of staff lacked compassion and empathy to what any of my family were going through especially my brother. Any time he buzzed for pain relief he felt like he was causing too much hassle asking for it despite being in extreme pain. One staff nurse actually rolled their eyes at him when he asked and a couple of other staff members also came across rude.

They put towels in the bathroom for him despite not being able to get there on his own due to high pain levels and never offered to assist him with washing. From our experience, there was a minority of staff that were lovely and approachable which was like winning the lottery to him but sadly they are very few and far between in this ward, if we as a family have learned anything from this place it’s is how never to treat someone when they are at their lowest point in life.

Dear Lsm-19

Losing a limb is a life changing event, and we are disappointed that you felt the staff lacked compassion and empathy. I would hope to reassure you that this is not typical of the feedback normally received for the team in this clinical area, and is certainly not what we would expect.

I have spoken with your brother to discuss his care. However, if you wish to take this further can you please contact our Complaints Team on 0141 201 201 4500.

Regards

Kevin Mcauley
