"My husband’s emergency care!"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ayrshire Doctor on Call (ADOC) General practices in Ayrshire & Arran University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) University Hospital Ayr / Rheumatology

(as a relative),

I had noticed that my husbands colour wasn’t right & apart from a little shortness of breath while exerting himself, the only other symptom he had was that occasionally he had felt a bit dizzy. He didn’t want to bother anyone needlessly due to covid & although I had urged him to visit GP, he wouldn’t.

After we seen friends at the weekend, they commented on his colour and I decided to make the apt for him myself & explained the situation to our local GP. They have been amazing for our family primarily and he was given an apt with one of the ANP’s, Lisa. She was brilliant & knowing I was a nurse she spoke to my husband & he had said that I felt he shd get his bloods checked.

Fast forward to 9.30pm my husband called me to say that his blood levels were dangerously low. His haemoglobin was 51. An ADOC DR Phoned to say that as he wasn’t having any active bleeding or many symptoms they would arrange for him to go to rapid assessment at Ayr cau. There he was initially accessed by Sharon who was lovely and put him at ease. David the CSW took his bloods and we were treated with exceptional care. Dr Roomi spoke to us both and all the staff in Ayr Cau were so friendly and welcoming. I used to work with some of the staff so I knew a few but they involved me with my husbands care & it puts us both at ease & was very much appreciated.

We were then taken to ST12 day unit where almost immediately his infusions were started and he received exceptional care from Karen & Hollie. They actually didn’t know me but came to offer me a cuppa as I was quite shaken & offered me empathy. I was truly grateful & know that my husband is in the best care while I can’t be there. Thank you NHS AYRSHIRE & ARRAN. Another reason why I’m proud to be a nurse.

Good Morning Karen,

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your kind words of gratitude that you have expressed regrading your husbands recent visit to the University Hospital Ayr. We are extremely proud of our team here at the CAU and throughout Ayr Hospital and we are always delighted to hear feedback from patients and relatives. I will certainly pass on this to the nursing staff and Medical staff that you have named and to the whole team. I trust your husband is recovering well and please do pass on our kindest regards to him.

with thanks
