"My son's treatment"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Paediatrics

(as a service user),

My 5 week old son had to go to sick kids in Edinburgh for a test. We were told he needed to have a covid test however myself and his twin who were also attending with him did not need to have a test. I do not understand the logic behind that we were all attending the hospital? I was also told my partner could not attend but other children in the ward had two parents with them. I had two 5 week old babies to care for on my own! Thankfully the nurses on hand were amazing and helped anyway they could. Otherwise I would not have been able to get through the day.

The main point of this review is that my son had a rectal biopsy, I had to leave the room while this was being done as it was something which the Doctor advised I would not like to see, which I appreciate as I could hear him screaming while I waited outside.

Since the procedure I have been asked by my own Doctor and others I know what happened during the procedure and I have explained. They have all been horrified by the story and all have asked if he received any sedation and to my knowledge, he did not. My Doctor wondered if this was standard practice for babies, as grown adults would be sedated for a rectal biopsy. For 2 weeks after the procedure he was extremely unsettled and I believe it is because he has had an invasive procedure which has caused him a lot of distress and pain!
