"Disgusting treatment"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

Currently sitting in A&E at Monklands Hospital with my mother, who is in her 80's. She was discharged today at 7pm and we have been here since just after 8pm and it's now after 2am and still have not seen a doctor

My mother is in pain which she has been in since Saturday severe back pain and she can't walk but she hasn't had an X-ray? They are treating her for a urine infection which could be possible as she now has delirium which she didn't have when she came in.   We have been told that they have no beds in the hospital, no beds in Lanarkshire apparently, so they discharged her with no care plan in place and she cannot walk.

If I had studied to be a doctor for all of those years, I'm sure this wouldn't have been my vision. I think I'd feel sorry that I had spent all those years and this is the result. Someone sitting in an office checking beds, putting people out on the street when they are unable to fend for themselves.

Our NHS appears to be crumbling, and yes I know there is a pandemic and people are dying everyday, but I just hope that my mother is not one of them tonight.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on Care Opinion on behalf of your mother.

I can fully understand how this would have been a stressful time for you both, and I can only apologise for your experience. We are experiencing significant challenges within our Emergency Department and across UHM at this time; however I do not use this as an excuse and our team always strive to provide the best possible patient experience and care, so once again I apologise for any delay or negative experience you may have encountered.

If you would like me to look into the matter further for you both, with your mother's consent, please contact our Patient Affairs Team on

01236 713065 or via e-mail patientaffairs.monklands@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you again for highlighting your concerns which we fully take on board.

Hi Angela

Thank you for your response.

I fully understand the problems that the whole of the NHS is current experiencing and I sympathise for all of you I genuinely do. I will contact you regarding the outcome of this scenario just shortly via email as this was just the beginning of the problems we faced. Thankfully my mother was readmitted and dealt with appropriately and has since been moved to another hospital that can care for her needs. It is the initial misdiagnosis and treatment that is our concern we feel that we were totally failed and if I can help you understand how the families feel and this is taken on board it will make a difference to everyone involved.
