"Cancer care at home. Palliative care"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Haematology (Clinical) Older People’s Services / District Nursing

(as a relative),

My father was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and wanted to be at home to die. He was in hospital for 3 weeks before getting out home. All services were put in place before he was allowed home. District nurses, Marie Curie, Macmillan, Care assistants and the local hospice. Everyone treated him with the utmost care and respect and could not have done enough for him. I would actually say that we made friends with some of the people that attended to his needs. My brother and I spent the last  4 weeks of my father’s life at his home attending to him 24/7. Without the support of all the services it would have been a very daunting task. I am grateful for all the help and support that everyone gave us including our immediate families.

Hi AuggieT,

My name is Martha and I am the Macmillan Information & Support Manager for the Western Trust. I would like to thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience of the services that were involved to support your father’s wish to get home for end of life care.

All healthcare professionals within the services that you have mentioned, strive to support individual patient’s wishes where possible. To know that you felt everyone ‘treated him with the utmost care and respect’ and ‘could not have done enough for him’ can only reflect the person centred care that staff endeavour to provide.

Staff will appreciate that in your opinion ‘without the support of all of the services, it would have been a very daunting task’, especially in these challenging times.

I will share your positive experience with the healthcare professionals that you have identified to make them aware of your feedback.

Many thanks and take care.

Martha Magee
