"Eating disorders service that discriminates against people with cooccurring diagnoses"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Eating disorders

(as a service user),

Notts Eating Disorders Service (NEDS) seemingly refuses to accept patients into their service with certain co-occurring conditions, in my case personality disorder and autism.

I was not offered an initial assessment to provide any further information regarding my referral. I was discharged from a dietetics service and then a referral to Freed Beeches was rejected as they suggested that NEDS would be most appropriate due to the severity of my eating behaviours. However, NEDS have also rejected my referral stating I apparently like diagnostic labels when in fact clarity helps me as ambiguity causes me significant anxiety due to my autism. I am now back to where I started and have received zero treatment as I continue to lose weight.

Upon trying to telephone NEDS to discuss why my referral was rejected, I was put on hold only for them to hang up on me. Having tried to phone back, no one answers now unless I call on a withheld number; make of this what you want but I feel that this service discriminates against disabled individuals and cherry picks patients based on their own preferences instead of the needs of individuals who are most vulnerable and require specialist input.

Thank you for your feedback, we always value hearing thoughts about the service. I’m sorry you have not had a positive experience and your referral was not accepted.

We pay great attention within our multidisciplinary meeting when reviewing referrals to the service and always consider the best possible pathway for service users with comorbidities.

I am sorry that you were not able to get through on the telephone, we would not have intentionally lost your call.

Please can I advise that if you are continuing to lose weight that you seek advice from your GP who can liaise with us regarding the most appropriate pathway for you.
