"I was treated very well"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 North Cardiology Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a service user),

I arrived to the accident and emergency department yesterday evening at 5 am in the morning after ringing an ambulance from my home. They were there extremely quickly (within about 5 minutes). This was very reassuring as I was having a heart attack and I knew when they arrived I was in good hands.

I was reluctant to come to hospital as I feared coming in and not being able to get home with the way hospitals are during the pandemic. The paramedics were very logical however and explained to me that the best place for me was in the hospital so I agreed to come. They assured me however that I would be treated very well and they were not lying when they said this.

The staff have been exceptional. They do so much for you as a patient and I have to say I have been very well looked after. I do not enjoy the hospital but at least I know for sure that the quality of care provided to you is extremely high. The doctor came to talk to me and told me that I may need stents put in. He explained everything in a way that was clear and treated me with respect. He didn't talk down to me or make me feel unknowledgeable instead he was empathetic and sympathized with me at this very worrying time in my life and my families' life.

The only downfall about my hospital stay has been the lack of visitors able to enter the wards. I have barely spent a night apart from my wife in my entire life so this has been very trying to be separated from my family. I understand it is to keep patients safe however as I am in a side room on my own, I believe there must be some way in which I could have my wife with me provided she had a negative covid test and obeyed social distancing.

Apart from that, everything has been positive and I think this experience will make me less nervous about coming to hospital if I needed to in the future.

Dear Treyj95

Thank you for your very kind compliments about our service and the staff who treated you during your recent heart attack. What a very frightening experience that must have been!

Thankfully You received a very fast response to your 999 call and the crew who arrived offered you both their clinical expertise and their vast experience to still your fears about travelling to hospital. The care, compassion and reassurance they offered helped you to make the right decision to attend the emergency room.

I would very much like to share your compliment with the crew involved however would need a few extra details. If you would be prepared to discuss, please contact me on Amanda.sweetlove@nias.hscni.net

I hope you are feeling a lot better and enjoy a speedy and full recovery.

Take care

Amanda

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am pleased to hear that you have had a positive experience with Craigavon Area Hospital and that the communication between yourself and the staff has been of a good level. This is especially important during such difficult times in our lives, I am glad that you felt respected and well informed. I will ensure your feedback is passed on to the team.

I have included some information on visiting and also the contact details of our virtual visiting team - we understand that visiting restrictions at the moment are very hard on patients and so we are doing our best to keep families and friends connected.

I wish you a speedy recovery, take care
