"I would prefer to be told a set date"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 4 North Surgical Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a service user),

I came to hospital via ambulance on Tuesday night. Unfortunately I was waiting for about 2.5 hrs for the ambulance to take me from my home to hospital. I was in quite a lot of pain but the paramedics tried their best to settle this when they arrived. They were very pragmatic and reassuring.

When I arrived at the a&e department , I was given a bed immediately. I really appreciated this as I was confident then that I would be seen to and sorted out as quickly as possible. The staff were perfect. They are aware of your needs before you even know what you need and provide an extremely high quality of care. They are respectful and kind to their patients on the ward. They are polite, professional and courteous and endeavoured to answer all my questions to the best of their ability. They communicated things well with me and tried to keep me up to date with the most recent changes to my care plan.

The ward is superb. It is a clean and comfortable space and I have enjoyed the company of my room mate very well. This is a real boost when visiting has been suspended as it keeps you in touch with other human beings even if they aren't your close family. The food is also great. It is top notch.

The one thing I would suggest as an improvement would be that communication between doctors, nurses and administration can sometimes be lacking. I am awaiting a surgery and have been told by one person that it will go ahead at one time and told by a different person it cannot go ahead until a later time. I would prefer to be told a set  date (even if it required waiting for a few days) from the get go as getting your hopes up about surgery and then being told plans are cancelled can be very disappointing. It is surgery dates that patients hold onto in the wards because it feels like you are jumping a big hurdle and are one step closer to returning home. That is a mere complaint however as everything else has been extremely positive.

Dear Treyj95

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the delay you experienced whilst awaiting an ambulance response. We are working tirelessly to try to address the barriers we face with resourcing.

Our staff also work tirelessly to ensure their patients receive care, compassion and clinical expertise. This is usually in situations which are highly emotive due to pain and fear. Our staff are excellent at reassuring patients and bringing calm to most situations and we are very grateful to hear that you received this level of care.

I would like to share your compliment with the crew involved however I would need a few extra details of the call. If you would be prepared to discuss please contact me on Amanda.sweetlove@nias.hscni.net

I hope you are recovering well and feeling much better

kind regards

Amanda
