"Terrible treatment from Mental health team"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Mental Health Team (Adult)

(as a service user),

After overdosing I called NHS 24 and the woman I spoke with was lovely and helpful.

Staff at crosshouse treated me well and with respect, no one judged me. The doctors went above and beyond for me, truly amazing. However, I felt the two members of the mental health team I seen were rude and unapproachable, they had no care for the way I felt and I left feeling worse than I did when I went in. They had no care in the world for what I had to say and as soon as I got upset they both got up and said that I was discharged and left the room. I sat crying in the room in disbelief and one walked in to tell me I was taking up space for other patients and to basically hurry up at which I got frustrated and scratched at my forehead till it bled - again purely out of frustration. I’m not stupid, I’m a university student and I actually know quite a lot as mental health is the sector I planned on going into and I know for a fact I wouldn’t treat anyone the way they did me. They really need to work on their presentation to patients because in no way is it okay to make someone feel the way they made me feel, I felt like dirt on their shoes and it’s made me think even more that I’m not worth living.

Thank goodness for the mental health hub as I called them when I left and they’ve led me here to voice my story and I feel a little better as at least someone in the mental health field can be empathetic and listen to the way I feel and what I feel I need.

Dear blackbirdrh45

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. Whilst not a positive experience, it's good that you have shared how you feel about the service you received. Care Opinion is an excellent platform for people to tell their story. I'm pleased by doing so, you at least feel a little better.

I reply in relation to your experience of NHS 24. I'm pleased to read your felt our staff member, during your initial call, was 'lovely and helpful'. It’s also good to see that, following your experience, you contacted the Mental Health Hub for support. Please continue to make use of the highly trained staff within our Mental Health Hub and remember we also have our Breathing Space Service who may be able to assist if needed (08000 83 85 87). Calls are free from all phones. Their Advisors are available 6pm -2am Mon - Thurs and Fri 6pm - Mon 6am.

The staff at Crosshouse Hospital sound as though they treated you in a very person-centred manner. I'm sure the mental health team involved in your care will however be concerned to see your feedback for their service.

I'd be pleased to hear further from you if you wish to share any more detail on your contact with NHS 24. You can call me on 07814 299944 or email at patient.experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

I wish you well meantime.

Take care
