"Surgery was great but felt unsafe in a&e"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 4 South Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

All the staff have been so so good and everyone has been more than nice. The nursing staff are so kind pleasant and helpful which I feel has really aided my recovery. The doctors have been amazing at communicating everything with me and

I like how I am left feeling informed about my treatment and what is next for my care. The surgeon who has been working with me has been great and made me feel safe and comfortable before going into my operation. I felt reassured as everything had been explained to me prior to my operation and this meant I was less anxious before I went in. Even after my operation, the surgeon made an effort to check up on me and spent time chatting for a while which I thought was nice touch. In terms of this ward, I feel safe here and know I am being treated well. I am offered pain relief as and when I need it and this means I am always comfortable in my recovery. Although I'm not able to eat much the food has been good so far and I have access to more than enough water.
A&E experience before the ward admission:
Before being moved up onto the ward I came through A&E. This wasn't a pleasant experience at all but it wasn't the fault of the staff instead it was the underfunded system. I had an extremely long wait which was made even more uncomfortable as I was in so much pain and although the staff made an effort to keep me informed and up to date, I really felt left in the dark waiting for my name to be called. I felt unsafe with so many other angry and sick people around me but I know staff were run off their feet so I don't think there was much they could have done.

We apologise that you felt unsafe in the department, unfortunately the department has been under sustained pressure these last number of weeks there has been a significant number of patients delayed waiting in the department son admission beds, this has led to the department being more crowded and contributed to long waiting times, the trust is working hard to address these issues. We hope you are recovering well.
