"Awaiting intense therapy"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 East Gynaecology

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

The toilets are absolutely horrendous.  In my opinion this issue really needs to be raised ASAP. Men and women share them. Anytime I go in to them, there is urine or poo all around the toilet seat and on the floor. It is absolutely disgusting. I actually have such a fear of going into the toilets and would rather hold it in so I don't have to go at all. The cleaning of these toilets really needs to be prioritized. It makes me feel so sick.

The food is horrific. There is no choice on the menu, I have been in here for 4 weeks and the menu has not changed. My mum and dad have been bringing me in food for me as I physically can't eat the hospital food anymore. It turns me.

All of the staff are brilliant in here. I have been in here waiting for intense therapy for my MS. The consultant says there isn't a neurological physiotherapist in this hospital so I have been waiting for a bed to become available in the Royal. The consultant has just informed me that the consultant in the Royal is now saying no to me going there to get intense therapy to help me. The consultant here is fighting for me which is good but I am so fed up and sad. I need to be at home with my 2 kids. I miss them so much and it is so hard not being able to see them. I feel like I can't do this anymore. When I came in here I was able to walk but now I am bed bound. I have gone completely down hill. I just really need this therapy. 4 weeks is far too long.

Dear Chafs65

Many thanks for taking the time to respond, we do welcome all feedback to help us improve the service we offer. I am extremely saddened to read of your experience on 1 East.

Your concerns regarding hygiene within the toilets and food options have been highlighted to the head of catering and domestic services.

Unfortunately due the ongoing pressures with COVID, wards throughout the hospital have been restructured to ensure patients are not unnecessarily exposed to other COVID positive patients and regrettably this has resulted in some mixed wards with male and female patients. It is recognised that this is far from ideal but it is something the Trust is reviewing on a daily basis. I am sorry to learn that your wait for intensive treatment in the Royal is so long and I can understand how you would wish to be back at home again with your children.

I wish you all the best with your recovery

Kind regards

Oonagh Campbell Kelly

Dear Chafs65

I am very disappointed to read your post. I have visited 1 East with the Domestic Services Manager and I can confirm that we identified small areas of improvement in the toilet facilities.

I am also sorry to see you find the food unappealing. We have introduced a new inpatient menu from today and I hope this provides you with more options.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Andrew
