"my recent stay on the Gynaecology ward"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 East Gynaecology

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been very happy with my care in Craigavon Area Hospital. The staff have been very good, the doctors are brilliant, everyone is very approachable. The bed is more than comfortable, the sheets are very clean and I sleep well. My experience in Accident and Emergency was very good, I had no problems. The paramedics in the ambulance were excellent and so caring.

My top suggestion for improvement is the state of the toilets in the Gynaecology / 1 East ward. The men and women share toilets. Some of male patients leave a mess in the toilets, moreover they sometimes come out of the bathroom exposed, so there is a real lack of dignity for some patients. The toilets are beside the kitchen and food in the ward, which puts me off eating as they are so disgusting. The shower up at my end of the ward doesn't work so I have to use the other shower which is also disgusting.in  my opinion.

It also appears the cleaning staff use the same mop to clean these disgusting toilets and showers to mop the rest of the ward.
I feel the food is disgusting there is little to nothing catered for vegans, no salads or fresh fruits.
The ward is roasting and we aren't allowed fans. It is  also really heart rendering that families aren't allowed to visit patients just now.

Thank you for posting regarding your recent hospital experience.

I am was very disappointed to read your post, so the Domestic Services manager and I visited the ward.

I will reply to each point as listed in your post.

Both the Domestic Services Manager and I inspected each toilet on the ward and found slight areas for improvement, which was addressed with the member of staff at the time. The Domestic Services Manager has also increased supervision checks of the facilities.

I am sorry to hear that one of the showers is not working, this has been referred to our Estate Services colleagues for repair. In terms of environmental cleanliness, the showers at the time of the inspection were found to be satisfactory.

Domestic Services use the Vildea Professional Microfiber system, which means the Domestic Assistant can use either disposable or reusable mop heads. The mop heads are presoaked in a special container within the cleaning trolley. As the mop is used on the floor area, it becomes dry and no longer usable. At this point the Domestic Assistant will change the mop head, to ensure effective cleaning takes place. We have strict Infection Prevention and Control guidelines and robust training programs in place. At no time would it be acceptable practice to use the same mop head between general and sanitary areas.

I am really sorry to read that you find the food options unsuitable. We have reviewed our inpatient menu and have a new menu becoming operational from the 2 August 2021. I appreciate that we have fewer Vegan options on the menu, however alternative options are available on request and the catering department will provide the diet requested.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Andrew
