"Staff just trying to do their jobs"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I was in Wishaw general casualty the other night with my child. We were asked to sit in a small waiting area with just 13 seats. My husband was with me but he waited in the car as we were asked to have only 1 adult per child - that was fine with me as we are still in the middle of this pandemic & it really needs to be remembered.

Well about half an hour after I was in, I heard a woman making a big fuss at reception saying about how government guidelines said two people was allowed in. She was spoken to politely by the receptionist but said her husband would be staying anyway. Then she, her child and her husband came into the waiting area I was in (along with another two mums and babies) and was ranting about how her husband would be staying.

They were asked by the nurses to have just one parent but she kept being so rude and disrespectful to them saying she only cares about her and her son (well so do I obviously but we need to respect the rules!)

This carried on and the child was coughing.

I just wanted out of there, she started the other two mums off as well because now they brought in their partners so it went to 7 adults and 3 children in that really small space.

I felt heartfully  sorry for those nurses because she was disrespectful.   They were professional and didn’t let the woman affect them.

Anyway, I just wanted to say well done to the staff because I bet you she writes a complaint because she kept going up to reception to ask the nurses names.

My own child had to wait 4 hours to be seen which is obviously not good, you need more doctors in there. The doctor we saw was lovely though and she put my mind at rest.

Thanks for the job you are all doing.

Dear Nhs supporter1

Thank you very much for sharing your experience at our Emergency Department and I indeed hope that your child is feeling much better. I have no doubt this was a worrying time for you and your husband.

We are trying our best to work within the guidelines that we have been provided with during this pandemic and the staff are working so very hard to ensure safety in our waiting rooms as well as in the main department. As you have personally experienced this can be a challenge for our staff and I am very happy for the praise that you have given and I will ensure this is shared with the staff in the ED.

We have been experiencing high volumes of patients attending the department; however please be assured that we endeavour to ensure appropriate information and treatment to all patients at all times. The staff are working so very hard to see and treat patients within a timely manner, and I can only apologise for the length of wait you had during your attendance.

Best wishes to you and your family

Faith
