"Stoma care"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Was admitted to Addenbrookes with a perforated bowel.  I was operated on and given a stoma.  On discharge I was told as I live in Essex any stoma care would come via Princess Alexandra Hospital.

I've met with my stoma nurse twice in 6 months since my operation.  Telephone appointments have been scheduled which are not convenient to me and when I try to call my stoma nurse for advice, I'm directed via a central number and speak with a receptionist.  This person repeatedly mispronounces my name and when I've corrected them the response was 'whatever' and I've not ended up speaking with my stoma nurse, either my message isn't passed on or they choose not to take on the extra workload.

I don't like to bother workers in the NHS which is how I ended up up with a perforated bowel, but to constantly face issues when trying to speak directly with a stoma nurse just isn't acceptable.  I didn't want to receive care from Princess Alexandra Hospital for this precise reason as word of mouth I've heard is that its an awful hospital and my personal experience only backs this up

Dear doradosf97,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and my apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

I know that the Stoma Care Specialist Nursing team as well as our Switchboard Team would be exceptionally disappointed to read of your experience of trying to get through to the right person. Please be assured we have passed on your comments to the relevant team and highlighted your concerns.

We know we don't always get things right and so you may well continue to have worries or concerns about your care, in which case please do get in touch through our PALS service at paht.pals@nhs.net or call us direct on 01279 82 72 11, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
