My mum was asked to attend a and e on Monday night after the GP noted her magnesium levels was at a critical low level of 0.23.. Mum is currently going through chemotherapy for oesophageal cancer and this was 2 days before what we hope to be her final treatment.
Mum entered a and e at 18:30 in the afternoon. It was 3:30am in the morning before receiving her first magnesium infusion which she was originally sent to a and e for. When mum had encounters with staff their mannerism was poor , stating to my mum that she’s another gp referal. Being the professionals that they are their frustration with people being admitted through being a referral by a gp should not have been expressed to my mum multiple times and also if they had of taken the time to read mums medical history they would have seen she was going through chemotherapy and receiving magnesium infusions regularly. Also if they had of had a conversation with mum they would have been aware that mum did try to contact her oncology nurses in Belfast before admission so again a comment made to her asking why didn’t she go to Belfast instead would not have been needed. I understand that staff in a and e department’s are very busy throughout however their comments of frustration is unprofessional to express infront of patients. These comments that was repeated to my mum on multiple occasions by a number of different staff has caused unnecessary stress and makes mum reluctant to attend hospital appointments again if needed.
"Poor mannerisms of staff."
