"Double wisdom tooth extraction"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Oral surgery

(as a service user),

I had my 2 right wisdom teeth removed. The staff prior to my procedure were lovely and supportive, but after the procedure I felt that the care level dropped.

- I received conflicting information from different members of staff about medication - I was told that I was being prescribed codeine by one member of staff but it turned out not to be the case

- I was told I would receive another dose of codeine and oramorph before discharge which also never happened

- I was never given a proper bed, instead I was left on a trolley

- I was discharged with SPO2 which was flickering between 93 and 95, low blood pressure and a high heart rate - I wasn't allowed to walk out of the hospital because it was too low

- my discharged letter states that I should have received a pack to stop bleeding if it should have occurred, which was also never given

- the call buzzer in the bay I was in either didn't work, or was ignored when pressed

Dear disinfectantyq87

I am sorry to hear that we did not communicate as effectively as we could have throughout your stay. We do endeavour to ensure all of our patients are kept up to date with their plans of care and to improve this we have initiated a new daily communication information sheet to give to each patient each day. I am unsure as to the information in regards to a pack you may have been discharged with, normally patients are advised of with any bleeding to place an ice pack if possible, I apologise this was not made more clear to you.

Unfortunately due to increased capacity within the hospital, sometimes it is necessary to use our treatment room to enable patients to receive inpatient care. If this is potentially going to be for a prolonged period of time then it would be expected to provide a bed rather than a trolley and I am again sorry this did not happen.

Prior to discharge from hospital the medical team reviews all observations alongside the nursing team and ensures the patient is medically optimised to leave hospital to provide some reassurance to yourself. I will ensure I feed back to the team your concerns regarding the timely answering of the patient call bells and I am sorry you felt this way.

I am sorry your stay on Greetwell Ward was not a positive one and I will work with and feedback to the team to ensure this experience is not repeated.

Kind Regards

Laura Cousins
