About: Barnsley Hospital / Endocrinology The Dove Valley Pms Practice

(as a service user),

I was contacted following a referral from my GP, who I had spent time discussing my symptoms with as well as having a blood test which revealed hormone irregularities. The doctor from endocrine did not know my symptoms despite the previous time taken to talk my GP through them. Having to go through this again (there is a long list of symptoms) was upsetting and frustrating and felt like a huge waste of time when this could have been communicated as part of the referral. I didn't feel the doctor from endocrine either listened to my symptoms or took them seriously. They said yes to some and said nothing about others. I feel they attempted to normalise some symptoms as part of life for women, which undermines the horrific experience I have been going through for the past four years. They did provide some next steps which will take investigations further, and I am happy with that. However on the whole, my experience was upsetting and demoralising. I have been made to feel there is nothing wrong with me, that my symptoms are in some way fraudulent. This is not the way anyone should be made to feel when they are struggling with their health.

Thank you for your comments, it is difficult to respond as we only have limited information but we are sorry that you feel dissatisfied with the service provided to you. Patient referrals include information from medical records such as problems, medication, results and the last consultations on the records. However it would be normal for the consultant to take a full history at an initial consultation. If you would like to discuss this further you may wish to contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service on 01226 432330/432571. Thank you.
