"Long waiting time"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Endoscopy/Colonoscopy

(as the patient),

I had an appointment in the endoscopy department. The staff were excellent.   However I was kept waiting for three and a half hours to be seen while other patients were coming and being seen immediately. As the procedure precluded me from drinking, I went over six hours without a drink and got chilled sitting in a draught while waiting.

Dear Marsfj59

My name is Sarah Reed and I am the Endoscopy Unit Lead at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Thank you for taking time to post us some feedback. It is lovely to read that the staff were excellent.

I am sorry that you were waiting, while other patients were being seen immediately. We have 5 procedural rooms in Endoscopy, doing different procedures. Some lists are quicker, as some tests may only be 15 minutes. Other tests can take an hour, dependent on the patient and the procedure required.

Due to COVID-19 we also have to take additional precautions ensuring each room is thoroughly clean between each patient, this can add additional time to our day.

We try and notify patients by sending out in the procedural leaflets, that they could experience a four hour wait time from when they arrive on the Unit until their test. If you did not receive this information, let me know and I can follow this up with our bookings team.

I am sorry you were cold whilst waiting for the procedure, unfortunately this time of year the weather is forever changing and I have now informed staff, to ask patients who are waiting whether they are comfortable and warm. If they are cold, we offer the patient a blanket.

I understand that being nil by mouth for and waiting for a period of time can cause some frustrations and again I apologise for your experience. I hope my explanation helps in some way, if not then please feel free to email me sarah.reed17@nhs.net.

Kind regards

Sarah
