"Can't ask for any more"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Minor Injuries

(as the patient),

Professional and friendly treatment. Staff were punctual and well organised. They also explain everything clearly and in detail. They don't rush you and are happy to answer questions. All staff very friendly. Can't ask for anymore. Only problem was public transport to Arbroath from some parts of rural Angus is really poor. Angus council need to be more flexible in terms of where you can have treatments performed, either at GP clinics or regional hospitals. Or they could also offer subsidised taxis in areas that are poorly serviced by buses. This is important when you need to get to the hospital quickly ie for stitches, especially as you can wait up to 4 hours for someone to call you back after calling 111.

Dear irn-bruiser

Thank you for sharing your response on care opinion. I'm so pleased to hear that you received a friendly and professional service when you attended the Minor Injury unit in Arbroath. The nursing staff in the minor Injury and illness service know how important it is to allow patients time to discuss their concerns and always try to provide advice on how to manage their injury/illness. Most of the staff have undergone further training over may years and have excellent knowledge on a wide variety of minor injuries and illnesses.

The redesign of urgent care set out by the Scottish Government is to try and ensure that patients are seen by the right person, in the right place, at the right time. This is to try and ensure that patients don't have any unnecessary travel, or have to wait long periods of time in overcrowded waiting areas, especially when the Covid 19 pandemic is still with us.

I understand that phoning NHS 24 can take some time especially during busy periods and if patients have an emergency they are always advised to hang up and phone 999. Phoning the NHS 24 service on this occasion allowed you to be sent to the most appropriate place and prevented a long wait when you arrived which can be upsetting for patients.

Living in a rural area always presents problems with public transport and access to health care. Angus Health and Social Care partnership as well as the Out of Hours service are aware of the difficulties this present but unfortunately we are do have capacity to have the staff with these extended skills in every town. The way that health care is provided is changing and we are looking at how we can provide a safe and effective service for all patients.

I hope my response has helped to clarify some issues that you have raised, however if you would like to discuss further please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I will share your response with staff in the Minor Injury and Illness service and with the wider team. Thank you for taking the time to post your story on care opinion as providing feedback helps us to improve our service.

Kind Regards

Anne Black
