"My daughters"

About: City Hospital / CAMHS University Hospital Hairmyres / Mental Health (Wards 19 &20)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughters who are 18 years old have had experience with Hairmyres ward 20. One as an outpatient and one as an inpatient. I felt that the hospital treated my daughter like an animal. I know she is not perfect but I saw other patients treated with better kindness and respect.

My daughter went through hell in here. She previously spent 3 months in cornhill in Aberdeen who in treatment were excellent. She was under the camhs team and was diagnosed with borderline personality but later in Hairmyres, after one 20 minute appointment with psychiatrist was told nothing wrong and no condition and adrenaline based, and told my husband if she was going to commit suicide would have done it by now. My other daughter spent 2 months in cornhill and was released to the community and condition was dropped. The 2 girls then had to sign a form relinquishing community help and if they tried to commit suicide would be taken into police custody.

While she was in ward 20 she heard nurses talk about her and snigger. My girl is not psychotic and does not imagine situations or a liar. She had all phones taken away and laptop which ended up broke and was her only lifeline to her sister. She was drugged with needles and I call this barbaric. We complained to the manager at Hairmyres about situation and about change of doctor. Nothing done just glad to get her home. My daughters have now had several attempts on their life and because 1 doctor has the poet to say nothing wrong end up with criminal charges and no future. Thank you mental health nhs

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, it's only by people telling us about their experiences we know what we are doing well and what we could do better. While assuring to read that the treatment your daughter received from Royal Cornhill Hospital was excellent, it’s sounds like you and your daughters have been going through a really difficult time.

Your story mentions a form that your daughters signed. After some exploration, I understand this was a voluntary agreement with the police about them not going to high risk areas in the City. In the event of a difficult situation, police would have been called but professional support from mental health services would have always been available. I’m sorry if this was not communicated clearly with you, or the girls, and also for any upset and worry this has caused.

We thank you again for sharing your lived experience of this process as it has helped us understand if we need to make improvements on how we communicate with patients and their families in future. As well as ensuring clear and accurate communication between other professional colleagues, such as Police Scotland.

If you would like to give feedback on how best to do this I would be happy to listen and can be contacted by email: gram.camhs@nhs.scot, FAO Sheila Reid

I understand both girls are under the care of the team at NHS Lanarkshire now and I’m sure colleagues there will provide a response to your story too.
