"Concerning practice."

About: West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance)

Took my daughter (9 months old) to the UTC. She had two areas of inflammation with yellow areas around her right eye. I was concerned due to the proximity that she was at risk of developing peri-orbital cellulitis.

I was met by a very polite and welcoming receptionist who was lovely. My daughter then had a very basic triage by a nurse - who introduced herself and was polite. After a short wait she was then seen by a doctor who appeared disinterested and abrupt.

I have the following concerns about your UTC:

- I brought a 9 month old in with a ?infection. At no point was a full set of obs completed, meaning that no pews/pops could be calculated and therefore any systemic infection would be missed.

-The department is full of signs saying all under 18s must be weighed, my daughter was not. I know from my own practice that all under 1s should be weighed for SG as much as physical health.

-No safeguarding questions were asked at any time, another thing I assumed was standard practice in urgent/emergency care.

-No HCP even requested my daughters red book.

-the doctor who saw my daughter barely examined her eye, didn’t involve me at all, and when I asked a question regarding putting sun cream around the area due to the heat, I got an answer that was borderline sarcastic.

-The triage was basic to the point of being ineffective. No questions were asked regarding her birth etc.

Overall the service was mediocre. I would be concerned about the things that will be missed if you don’t evaluate these points.
