"Rude receptionist"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I've had quite a lot of appointments and admissions during this pregnancy and usually treated ok in the wards, but one receptionist is rude to the point of having me in tears.

At one appointment there were a few patients waiting to get in which isn't ideal anyway when everyone can hear your private details.

This receptionist was shouting down their mobile phone at someone while ignoring the queue of patients. Another receptionist had their coat on and was either just starting or just finishing but why couldn't they use the other computer in the office to take my details while the shouty one got on with their personal business?

On two other occasions I've had the misfortune to encounter this same person and they couldn't be ruder or less interested in people if they tried. I am not from the UK so I don't know if they are racist to me or rude to everyone.

Are NHS staff not given training before being allowed to meet patients? I dread going to my next appointment in case I have to meet them again.

Thank you for sharing your experience of the maternity outpatient department, I am very sorry that you dread coming back to our department and please accept my apologies for the way staff have behaved. All members of staff in the NHS, regardless of role, should show the same caring and understanding approach to all women and families. I will feed this back to my outpatient reception team, regarding appropriate behaviour towards families who attend our service, and if you wish to discuss this with me directly then please call 01224 552 116 and ask to speak to Sarah Campbell.
