"Hip Operation / that did NOT happen ."

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Orthopaedics (Bones, Joints and Fractures)

(as the patient),

20th I January 2020 an ex- ray showed a full hip operation was required ,I was put on a waiting list and advised of a 6 MONTHS  waiting list.

After 11 MONTHS assessments and  tests were made,  a date of 5th January 2021 was given for 1st operation . —————————————— Cancelled. !!!
2nd February  2021 date for 2nd operation given——cancelled
5th March 2021  3rd date for Operation  ——————cancelled
31st March 2021 4th date given for operation———-cancelled
I need to know when this hip operation is going to take place .
MY Story is NOT a Good one and,I do not feel good about it. I feel let down by the NHS . All my cancelled operation were due to be undertaken at Dr Gray’s Hospital Elgin

On one occasion I was told — lack of beds was the reason for the delay .

On the third occasion I was in the ward with two ladies who were waiting for knee replacements, ready to be gowned up when the surgeon arrived . All operations were cancelled due to emergencies we were given breakfast and sent home .

I would like to offer you my sincere apologies for any distress and upset caused to you and your family by the multiple cancellations of your orthopaedic surgery. This is not the standard of care that we would wish to provide to patients and we are sorry that this has been your experience.

The bed position at Dr Gray’s Hospital remains very challenging due to an increased volume of emergency admissions which means that beds in the Orthopaedic Ward planned to accommodate our elective care patients are unavailable.

During the winter months where unscheduled, or emergency admissions place increasing demand on Hospital beds, this can often be the case and this has sadly been the case this winter, not only at Dr Gray’s Hospital but also at other acute hospital sites across the region.

The situation has been made more challenging as a consequence of necessary bed spacing measures put in place to maintain physical distancing for patients and staff and a different profile of acuity in those patients requiring emergency admission, resulting in for many a longer stay in hospital than is usual.

Whilst not our preference, we do therefore, on occasion, have to cancel elective procedures in order to accommodate the most acute and urgent cases requiring hospital care. We had consciously tried to continue a level of planned surgical operating at Dr Gray’s during these challenging times, as opposed to planning to do none at all but lately this has become too difficult.

The clinical and management teams at Dr Gray’s are actively focused on finding solutions to this current situation in order to allow a level of elective surgery to recommence in a manner that protects the required bed capacity from being compromised by the predicted ongoing high volumes of emergency admissions.

I understand this has been a very difficult time for you and again, please accept my unreserved apology for any distress and upset this has caused.
