"Nursing care."

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I found it difficult to know the difference between the nursing grades as it was difficult to see their badges, so I didn't know if I was speaking to a member of trained staff.  In my opinion I saw some badly fitting uniforms, which must have been very uncomfortable to work in.

Medical staff were excellent, and always said who they were.

On my morning of admission I was shown which bed was mine, and then left to sit there for more than 90mins, during which time no one came near me and I was completely ignored by all staff. At this point I was seriously thinking of phoning my husband to take me home.

I'm sorry to complain, but having been a nurse many years ago I do feel that some standards have slipped when it comes to patient care.

Dear Rudy

Thank you for taking time to tell your story on Care Opinion. I'm sorry your experience was not as expected and that you feel that some standards have slipped since times when you were nursing.

Its disappointing to read that after being shown you to your bed space you were left unattended for 90 minutes. Unfortunately without specific details I am unable to understand the reasons for this, however to be left without any communication should not happen.

We should be proud of our uniform and always display good standards The NHS Scotland nurse uniforms at times can be difficult to distinguished between bands of registered nurses, however each staff member should be introducing themselves and badges should be able to be read. In an effort to address this as we visit the wards we will make a special point of ensuring badges are able to be read and highlight to individuals any issues. We do have picture leaflet showing the different uniforms which we should have displayed and I will rectify if not.

I will also take your story to the next Senior Charge Nurse meeting and together we will address these failing standards.

Take care and thank you again.

Diane
