"Complex issues with my eyesight"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with Retinal Vein Occlusion a few year ago.

I had a wonderful Consultant at Hairmyres Hospital, they tried various treatments including injections into my eye and laser treatment.

Unfortunately for me this Consultant left their post at Hairmyres.

One year later,I still had no further consultations with anyone from Hairmyres Hospital,so I telephoned them and was told that for some reason I had not been referred to another Consultant regarding further treatment.

When I eventually did get an appointment to another Consultant,I received devastating news that I now contracted Glaucoma and Cataracts in both of my eyes, therefore,I would have to be referred to DVLA regarding an eyesight test to be able to continue driving, I did pass this eyetest, but I would have my driving licence restricted to a Medical Driving licence that would only be valid for 3 years, then have to undergo a further eye test.

I was now under the care of another Consultant, who I went to for regular appointments. My last appointment with this Consultant was February 2020,at this appointment the Consultant informed me I would require further Laser treatment to both of my eyes as a matter of urgency.

This appointment was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid outbreak and I was informed that I would receive treatment whenever possible.

By September 2020 I still had not received any news regarding my appointment,so I telephoned the Consultants secretary to enquire what was happening with my appointment, only to be told that all appointments have been cancelled due to Covid, and that I was still on the waiting list for treatment.

This is now almost the end of May 2021 and I have no appointment for my treatment, nor any communication from the Ophthalmology Department to inform me of future appointments for treatment.

This situation has caused me a great deal of stress, anxiety and worry regarding my eyesight.

Can someone please inform me when I am likely to expect my treatment to resume?

I await your reply

Thank You

Dear Molli,

The last year has been challenging and caused significant disruption to the health service as has been well publicised in the media. I'm sorry that this has resulted in delayed treatment for the ongoing management and treatment of your condition.

The Hospital Eye Service is trying to recover services whilst adhering to Scottish Government guidelines on physical distancing which does impact capacity, but we are working longer days and at weekends to try and meet the needs of the people waiting for appointments.

If you're able to contact my colleagues in Patient Affairs we'll be able to review your circumstances to advise when you can expect an appointment. patientaffairs.hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or Tel No: 01355 585325

Kind regards

Rick
