I was welcomed into the ambulatory care department of Forth Valley Royal Hospital at 8 am and over the next couple of hours had a chat with some of the people who would be involved in my procedure. They took great care to tell me what I should expect. When the time arrived I walked along to the theatre with my surgeon and anaesthetic staff where we settled into the anaesthetic room. Everyone was very chatty, and friendly, managing to keep any nerves at bay. I had a spinal anaesthetic, with nerve block and local injections so there was no chance of feeling any pain. Once I was settled in a comfortable position, I went to sleep, knowing no more until I woke up in the recovery room, with lots of people to keep me company until it was time to move to the ward which would continue my care.
The National Treatment Centre, a COVID free ward, looked after me with great compassion, making sure I was pain-free at all times and always had everything I might need. The next day, after a visit from the physiotherapists and my lovely surgeon, I was allowed to go home, just 36 hours after I had arrived. My stay was short but very sweet and I am delighted to be rid of the pain which has been curtailing my activities for years.
