"Communication problem but positive result re triangle of care"

About: Adult Mental Health Services - Community (County) / Family Intervention Team Adult Mental Health Services - Community (County) / Gedling Local Mental Health Team (LMHT)

(as a carer),

About a month ago I telephoned Gedling LMHT with a couple of queries.  The first was answered very satisfactorily - I had asked what was the name of the service my son had several years ago resulting in him getting meaningful activity - I was told this would probably have been the enablement process.  My second query followed my son's telephone appointment with his consultant as I was concerned that something might have got lost in translation concerning my son's remarks about involuntary movements.  I was asked if I would like the consultant to telephone me and said 'yes' but I did say it wasn't urgent for that day.

Three weeks after this, and not having heard anything, I mentioned this when I attended the first AMH Carer virtual Carer Support Group.

I would recommend this group.

Andrea  from the Family Interventions Team immediately offered to put a note on the system asking for Dr Impey to call me.  And the next day I got that call.  Better still my son was with me at the time and through using speaker phone the 3 of us had a very constructive conversation.  This was also good as it was the first time I had spoken with my son's consultant and I think that was also important.  This phone call was, I think, a perfect example of the Triangle of Care working and shows it really does make a difference.

Dear Mental health Carer

Thank you for providing feedback in regard to Gedling Local Mental Health Team and The Family Intervention Team, it is very much appreciated. Especially your recommendation of the Carer Support Group.

I’m pleased you had a positive response to your initial question however I am sorry you had to wait so long before managing to speak to your son’s consultant. We are trying our best to improve communications between clinical staff, service users and carers and this is an ongoing process.

I will ensure that the Team Leader for Gedling Local Mental Health Team is made aware of your feedback so she can share it with the clinical and administrative staff.

I would like to wish you and your son all the best for the future and hope you continue to have a positive experience with our services.

Michael Taylor

Hello Mental Health Carer

Thank you taking the time to make a posting about your experience and it is a lovely posting and I'm sure my colleagues at Gedling Mental health team will be very happy to hear about your experience in particularly seeing Triangle of Care in action!

Although you did have to wait for the call from the consultant its so good to hear how colleagues made that happen which resulted in a meaningful call.

I wish you and your son all the best in your continuing journey and please do not hesitate to contact me if required in the future.

Update posted by MENTAL HEALTH CARER (a carer)

I should perhaps have made it clear that the consultant (Dr Impey) hadn't received the initial message to call me - but did so as soon as he was asked. I appreciate all the responses.
