"I felt mocked for my suicide attempt"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Acute Medical Unit

(as a service user),

I spent the night in AMU after taking tablets to end my life. I didn’t manage to go through with the suicide, but I still needed medical attention.

I lay listening to some of the nurses making what I found to be mocking comments about my attempts. Before discharge, some of the doctors joked about me asking “why don’t they f***ing look it up?”, in reference to the amount and type of medication I had taken to end my life.

How are these people trusted to look after people in mental distress?

Amaivda I am very sorry that you have had cause to raise this concern via care opinion. I would like to discuss this with you if possible and would like more information to take this forward for you as it falls short of the standards I would except in RIE. Could you contact our PET team so we can establish contact to help you with this.

Once again I am sorry for your experience.

Michelle Jack Associate Nurse Director RIE.
