"Caring for dad"

About: Community Therapy Services / Nottingham West Community Therapy

(as a service user),

My husband & I moved in with my father in law late February as he was struggling to care for himself. We instantly knew we needed extra help with his walking, washing & night time. We felt very overwhelmed with everything happening & decided my husband would give work up to take care of both myself & Dad. We spoke to the gp who referred us to OT.

We expected to be waiting many weeks but we're contacted within the week & had a visit from Jessica, assistant practitioner.

Jessica was very friendly, caring & professional, she instantly recognised dad had foot drop & this would be causing his many falls. Jessica put a referral in to orthopaedic for dad to be fitted with a leg splint. Next was a memory clinic referral & a order for equipment from the red cross to help dad & us with his daily living. Jessica showed us some exercises to help keep dad moving which have helped tremendously, also lots of information for carers.

All these things have been put in place now, in such a short time. We have had no falls, dad can have a bath, get out of bed easily & walk safely thanks to Jessica.

The care & time Jessica has given to us is priceless, the quick turnaround to all the services have been so helpful to us. We can now manage much better & know if we ever need more help Jessica is only a phone call away, we are forever grateful to her.

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback about our service. I am so sorry to hear that you were feeling overwhelmed by the changes in your Dad's health, but I totally understand why you may have felt like this. Recognising there is a change in the function of a loved one is a hard situation to find yourself in.

I am thrilled that you have found the Nottingham West Community Therapy team to be of assistance, Jessica is a very experienced and valued member of our team, I am encouraged to hear your kind words about her practice. Thank you, I will be sure to feed them back to her. She will be delighted.

Our service aims to support people to live independent lives and in doing this we aim to support their families as well. We strive to meet the needs of our patients in a timely way and work across services to ensure we have provided individualised care. It is great to hear your Dad has made such good progress following our intervention.

As you say, we are only a phone call away, please do get in touch if we can help or support in anyway in the future. Reading this feedback has made me so proud of the services we deliver and the staff working within them. Thank you for your kindness and please accept my best wishes for your Dad's future health.
