"Upsetting treatment "

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

I am currently undergoing chemotherapy and, after recording a temperature at home, was advised by the Chemo helpline to go to Darlington hospital A&E to get checked over. On arrival at around 11pm I was directed to the waiting area. I sat there initially for around 45 mins. There were only 4 other people waiting to be seen. After that length of wait i had my bloods taken by 2 very nice nurses. They said, as it was quiet my bloods would be around an hr or less and that I would be called to see a doctor quite soon. As the nurses pointed out the risk of neutrophils sepsis in chemo patients who are displaying a temperature is extremely concerning. The nurses then directed me back to the waiting room. I then sat there feeling extremely poorly for a further 1 3/4 hrs before a Doctor called me through to a side ward for further checks. At no point did anyone come to check on either myself or any other patients. One poor man who looked very ill was throwing up constantly but was not offered any help other than a sick bowl. Once i was with the doctor i asked if my bloods were back (this was now 2 hrs after they’d been taken). He said no he’d chase them up. After being given the all clear for any infections, I eventually left A&E at 2.30am. Over 3 1/2 hrs later. As someone who was suffering the very unpleasant side effects of chemo from 3 days earlier I was quite honestly appalled at the lack of care and thought I was given during that time. Whilst all the staff I came across were courteous and friendly, there seemed to be a general feeling of they’d get to me when it suited them rather than any concern for my well-being. I will certainly think twice before going to that A&E department ever again. I can only hazard a guess at what kind of treatment you would receive if god forbid the place was busy.
