"Sudden excruciating pain in my head"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency Pilgrim Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I went in with a sudden excruciating pain in my head that did not disappear. I also had my Covid vaccine very recently. I was seen by a doctor in A&E then a registrar who both said that it’s possible that it’s a blood clot and I would need to be kept in hospital over night. I went for a CT scan and then the doctor said I would need another one with the dye in to check for the clot. After I had that I was told that I need to have a lumber puncture in the morning as the new doctor said there is a good possibility that it’s a sub arachnoid hemorage and the only way to find out is to have a lumber puncture.

In the morning the nurse came to my bed and said ok you can go home now! I said what the doctor had told me and they said that it was no longer needed and that I was fine, I said I was still in a lot of pain so the nurse got another new doctor to come to see me who had quite an aggressive manner and said that they don’t think it’s anything bad and that they need the bed!

Before I could say anything they were packing my stuff and asking me to call a cab to go home. I’m still in agony. I do have to say though if this is something that they have missed and anything should happen to me my husband has everything documented.

Dear TMac1

I'm sorry that it has taken a while to reply back to you and I hope that your excruciating pain has now subsisted. Clearly from what you have encountered - the lack and disjointed information you received and how we communicated this was inadequate and below what we would expect of our staff and we're sorry.

I am not sure which ward your were admitted to after you left our ED department but we would like to feed your words back to the team so if you are willing could you email us via patient.experience@ulh.nhs.uk and we can pass it on.

If you are still encountering pain, I would strongly urge you to either see your GP or visit ED or the UTC at the hospital

Regards
