"Staff had wrong information about my operation"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I fractured my hip through falling on New Eve and was taken to Pilgrim Hospital Boston. The ambulance staff were very kind and supportive, the wait to get into A and E was not excessive and the care was good.

I was transferred to Orthopaedic Ward, I was operated on in early January due to lists being full and had spinal block. All appeared ok, was told before op it was to be a complete hip replacement. On my return the ward said it was partial, and I was treated as such, no support stocking, turned regularly.

I was kept in bed until Thursday then was helped to edge of bed and was violently sick, given blood transfusion, stayed in bed until Friday. I started walking on Saturday, on Sunday and Monday was given exercises, and home on Monday evening.

On retuning to see the consultant in March he confirmed it was complete and bone had had to be wired. Until then I was not aware and was not given appropriate information on care and support of a full hip replacement, only been told by ward to get on with life and nothing else.

I was told physio would follow but nothing was organised and when I enquired at Pilgrim on physio number was told no physios, and if I was in pain to go to A and E, and ring ambulance if necessary. Not ideal in pandemic or other times, really.

I have felt let down, am aware of constraints of pandemic. I feel I should have been out of bed sooner to aid my muscles and more consideration should have been given. I do realise that if staff were given wrong information about my case it was difficult.

Dear Disallusioned

I am sorry your experience was not up the standards we expect to keep on the orthopaedic ward.

If you would like to forward your details to PALS@ulh.nhs.uk or ward 9A I will gladly look in to the details for you.

David Donohoe
