"My voice and my Speech and Language Therapist"

About: Lothian Community Services / Speech and Language Therapy

(as a service user),

I had a problem with my voice which started in 2015, when almost completely lost it and had an extremely strained voice for about 18 months. I got support from a Speech and Language Therapist then and it helped me get back to a more normal speaking voice. I realised with this how important the voice is in communication and in your identity. I have continued to experience voice strain and this was perhaps worse during Lockdown, due to overall anxiety. In February 2021, I received support and advice from a wonderful Speech and Language Therapist, Annabelle, via video.

This was an excellent experience with the therapist listening to my issues, understanding the whole person (and not just my voice) and offering really practical and useful advice and support, in a friendly and professional way.

I now hold the work of SLTs in high regard and thank Annabelle on this occasion for her excellent therapy.
