"My diagnosis and illness"

About: Dungannon / District Nursing

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer last week and told 4 days later it was stage 4. It's been a very difficult time for the family and my symptoms were meaning I had no energy and was very sick and sore. I was lucky to have the district nurse team call to do my syringe driver to try to manage the symptoms. Not having to leave my home and getting the time with my family has been invaluable. The nurses are fantastic, so caring professional and attentive. I could not ask for better. My only recommendation would be that their role is extended. If I need fluids I have to be readmitted to hospital. Due to my age I am not eligible for acute care at home. I would hate to need hospital admission. Due to covid and no visiting it would mean my now restricted time is spent away from the people I love. This needs reviewed Asap for all those in my position.

Dear Nicola83,

My Name is Katrina Loughran and I am the Integrated Care Team Manager and District Nursing Manager in Dungannon. Thank you so much for your feedback and kind words about our District Nursing service in Dungannon. We really appreciate the time you took to write about your experience, especially at what must be a difficult time for you. Can I reassure you that the district nursing teams are able to administer fluids in the community following a medical assessment and prescription of fluids by a doctor. In addition to the Acute Care at Home Team there are alternative services that can be explored to minimise the likelihood of a hospital admission. I would like to reassure you that the Acute Care at Home Team have received your suggestions also. The team will do their utmost to support you and your family during this difficult time and continue to provide your care at home as best we can.

Best Wishes,

Katrina
