"My time in the hospice"

About: St Lukes Hospice

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been in the hospice for over two weeks after being in hospital for many months and I have not been able to see my flat, family and dog.

I thought the hospice was full of gloom where very ill people go to spend their final days. This could not be further from the truth.  The hospice is full of life, care and compassion. I have been given some lovely knitted hearts for my family and these are very precious to me. I have my hearts in my favourite colours of black, red and gold.
I have been so well looked after by the nursing team, doctors, social workers, complimentary therapist and physiotherapists.  The housekeeping staff and the food has been amazing.  Everyone has been so very kind. I have been treated with dignity and respect.
Since being in the hospice I was feeling much more stronger, I wanted to go home for a few hours to be able sort out some practical tasks that I needed to do.  Jackie and Stella supported me to do this and I was able to go home with the support of Ian, a volunteer driver who was driving the Barbara Bus, which I understand had been recently donated to the hospice.  My journey in the bus was pleasant and comfortable. It was lovely to see the daffodils and the sunshine on the journey home. I am grateful that I was able to go home, even though it was for a few hours.

Thank-you to everyone at St Luke’s Hospice.

Thank- you for the lovely feedback regarding your recent care at St Luke's Hospice which will be passed onto all the teams you mentioned which include our housekeeping and catering staff.

The multi- disciplinary team at the hospice brings together the expertise and skills of different professionals to assess, plan and manage care jointly. Our goal is to enable patients to be comfortable, treated with dignity, so that they live each day as fully as possible.

We are pleased that you were able to go home for a few hours and we are delighted that you were able to go home in the Barbara Bus Service which is a new service that allows us to transport patients and has wheelchair accessibility. We will pass your thanks to Ian, our volunteer.
