My mum had a massive subarachnoid haemorrhage in December 2020. She was taken by ambulance to GRI A&E, the ambulance staff were great and the paramedic took the phone off my dad because he was incoherent and spoke to me calmly and let me know that I needed to go to my dad's to be with him.
We were called very soon by a doctor in A&E and he told us mum was in a coma and would not live. We were allowed to go into a room at A&E to see my mum and we were allowed my brother and sister to see my mum too. My mum was then taken to Ward 51 (not 100% sure if this is the right ward) where she was taken care of by a team of dedicated staff until her death on Sunday 20th December 2020. Every one of the staff we met were fantastic and nothing was too much bother for them.
The nursing teams were lead by Adam and Liam both of whom were so lovely to us. My dad and I were allowed to stay beside my mum the while time and my dad was holding her hand when she passed away. We feel so lucky to have the NHS and the care and treatment the staff provide. Every one from the female consultant who took time to clearly explain why mum would not wake up from the coma and the damage that had been inflicted to her brain to the lovely female member of staff wearing a light green tunic who kept my dad in tea and offered her sincere condolences when my mum passed away, we can't thank you enough.
I heard Michael Rosen speak of his experience being treated for Covid-19 on the news this morning and his poem for the 60th anniversary of the NHS, 'These are the hands', sums up how i feel about the NHS staff who CARED for my mum.
