"Being treated for haemochromatosis"

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Outpatients Department

(as a service user),

My son was diagnosed with haemochromatosis a year before me, his mum. I was diagnosed with this just before Christmas when I was taken into hospital with a stone in my gallbladder.

I started my treatment as soon as I came out of hospital in mid-December 2020. From then I've had a pint of blood taken out of me since. After I usually feel quite tired and my body feels cold.

Some weeks I get slightly more than one pint took out of me. Having this treatment helps prevent serious illness such as a heart attack or a stroke.  Haemochromatosis is basically having too much iron in your blood which is why I get treatment once a  week.

Attending STH for my treatment is accessible and convenient, the staff are friendly and professional, and the service they provide is excellent.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to share your experience with us, I am delighted to read such positive comments, and trust that with time you will see a noticeable improvement in your condition.

Attending the Day Clinical Centre weekly for venesections can be difficult for people and very tiring, so to hear your comments regarding its accessibility and the convenience of coming here, is very reassuring. It is also lovely to read you describe our staff as 'friendly and professional', and I will ensure that all the team are aware of your delightful comments.

We are happy to give you further information regarding haemochromatosis and where excess iron accumulates, etc, so please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit if there is anything you would like further information on.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your story with us.
