"Seating in A&E"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a service user),

I had to go to Altnagelvin A&E on Monday night. All the staff and the care I received could not have been better. However I found the seating extremely uncomfortable. The chair backs are set at an odd angle to the seats and provide little support for one’s back, I found this quite painful after only a short while and extremely so after an hour or so. My daughter had previously had to attend with a slipped disc and found it excruciating. Obviously it would be unrealistic to expect you to change the seating after an otherwise good refurbishment but perhaps you could provide some more conventional seating, like they have in X ray waiting rooms, as an alternative.

Many thanks

We would like to apologise for the discomfort you experienced while waiting in the Emergency Department, Altnagelvin Hospital.

The seating in the Emergency Department is used widely in modern Hospitals throughout the UK and was chosen due to its durability and resilience under tough cleaning regimes and also for its flexibility and comfort.

However we understand that this will not suit the needs of all users and we have put plans in place to ensure that alternative seating is available on request.
