"Covid 19 Vaccination deaf aware"

About: Southern Health & Social Care Trust / COVID vaccination programme

(as the patient),

I got my vaccine yesterday and I was happy with service I got as I can’t lipread with a face mask on as I’m hard of hearing/deaf. One of the staff knew me when saw my name on the card and came over and spoke to me. As I wouldn’t be able to understand the questions being ask when the staff was at the computer. Need to be more aware for access for deaf people who can’t hear or lip reading lips while face mask being worned. If you had signs etc to be clear what you want us to do or what being asked.

Good morning

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your experience of receiving your COVID vaccine. We understand how difficult it is at the minute with staff wearing face masks especially when you are hard of hearing/deaf. We are pleased to read that a member of staff did offer you assistance and we hope that this helped you. Our Assistant Director visited the Vaccination Centre yesterday and observed there was a posters in place encouraging attendees to ask for assistance if needed

On reviewing your feedback with our Sensory Team colleagues we thought that perhaps the Deaf Card that we introduced for our service users in SHSCT a few years ago may have been of benefit to you (if you do not already have one). This could be shown to staff in a variety of situations. We plan to review the information on this card and arrange for this to be reissued to deaf service users in SHSCT as we feel that this may be of benefit to others also during this time. If you wish to obtain a copy of the Deaf Card, please feel free to contact the Sensory Team;

Tel: 028 3839 4088. Fax: 028 3839 4095. Minicom: 028 3839 4738. Email: sensory.cherrytrees@southerntrust.hscni.net.

Kind regards
