"Outstanding care for my elderly father"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Elderly Medicine (Wards 51, 52, 54,55, 57, 8a & 2a)

(as a relative),

My Father was taken in via A&E one evening in late January 2021 with issues relating to his cognitive function. Unfortunately, he was kept in for observation and his condition didn't improve.

Despite the hospital's best efforts, he seemed to decline quite sharply and he remains in ward 10A as of the writing of this review. We hope, in time, that he'll be able to be moved to a care or nursing home in the coming weeks, but for the nearly 6 weeks he's been in ward 10A, we've been treated extremely well by the staff. We've sadly not been able to visit him, but all Doctors, Nurses and Therapists we've been lucky enough to receive updates from have been thoroughly professional, empathetic and encouraging, even when it's been fairly bad news that they've been telling us.

The main reason for me writing a review on a hospital, which is a complete novelty for me, is that I think the NHS punches well above its weight at the best of times. In a situation like this, where there's the very real possibility of losing your Father, and taking into account the current pandemic restrictions, being able to deal with people in a kind, caring manner is above and beyond.

I'd absolutely love to name and thank all the staff in the ward individually, but I only spoke with Andrew, Iain and Dr Sharkey, all of whom took time out of obviously very busy schedules to speak with myself and several other members of my family when we called in for updates.

Dear FrancisP
Many thanks for posting this on careopinion, it means a lot to know that what we are doing is helping at what is clearly such a difficult time for you and your family.
I will make sure that all the staff involved know, and print out your story so we can pin it to the wall for everyone to read.
Stories like this really help us remember what is important, and how well we can provide care, even when times are really tough.
