"My brothers dental abscess"

About: St Mary's Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

He had a 2 week history of a dental abscess with no improvement despite 2 lots of antibiotics.

He has autism so I attended to assist him.

The emergency dentist advised him to be seen by A&E.

We attended this AM & they let me sit with him the entire time and support him. He became very emotional & scared whilst with the triage nurse, Roger, assessed him. Roger took my concerns seriously and was very patient and supportive with my brother.

Roger believed that my brother needed IV antibiotics due to him being unable to keep any medication or food/liquid down.

We were placed in the fit to sit area & my brother was cannulated by a wonderful HCA & bloods done.

He was then assessed by the doctor, who was very helpful.

My brother received IV pain relief, fluids & an antibiotic, followed by an X-ray & a referral to QA hospital.

I cannot praise the ED staff enough - they were obviously very busy but took the time to explain everything to me so I could communicate it back to my brother.

The Porter, Andrew was also lovely & distracted my brother from his situation.

Finally when arriving at x-Ray, the technicians were at lunch, but very kindly cancelled their lunch break to see my brother.
