"Hairmyers/discharge/pharmacy services"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as a service user),

Close relative discharged from Hairmyers , lunchtime, this week.

Told her medication was not ready, so she would have to go home and collect a prescription from the hospital later in the day and go to a local pharmacy where hopefully her medication would be in stock.

My relative is in her 60, is ill, clearly,. Lives 15 miles away from East Kilbride  and has no way of just returning to the hospital later in the day , collecting a prescription and then trawling around local pharmacies.

My question is,

Why allow a patient to leave hospital without the necessary medication?

To expect anyone to make a return  journey to the hospital that same day to pick up a prescription for necessary medication is ludicrous.

What is the rational/ justification for this shoddy treatment?

Dear Zola

I am sorry to read about your relatives experience when being discharged from the hospital. I would like to offer my apologies as this does not meet the standard of care that we would expect within the hospital.

Discharge planning is an essential part of all patients care and it is important that there is clear communication and understanding of an individuals needs. A patient may be ready to leave the hospital whilst their medication is still being processed by pharmacy and I would expect a collaborative approach to managing this situation. Occasionally family members request that they return to collect a prescription as this suits their needs. However this should be an exception and not standard practice.

I will share your comments with the hospital wide team but would like to look into this further and would be very grateful if you would contact the patient affairs team on 01355 585325 to provide further details.

Please pass on my apologies to your family and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Lise
