"Excellent care in hospital"

About: Outpatients / Respiratory

(as a relative),

My father who was 86yrs old contracted Covid 19 at home. He was admitted to our local hospital in Daisy Hill Newry Co Down NI. where he rapidly deteriorated. As he suffered from Vascular dementia. I was allowed to spend his final 48 hours with him. The nursing, medical and support staff of Respiratory 2, (Female Surgical ward), although under enormous pressures were sensitive, kind and supportive to us both throughout. This made a very difficult and sad situation a lot easier for us as a family, knowing that we could be with him. The kindness of these staff should be recognised nationally as well as locally as the super human beings they are.

Thank you feels so inadequate but I do wish to thank you all.

I was made very welcome by all staff and when dad passed away, staff stayed in the room with me for support.

Regards

Dear Pmcgu - I am the Care Opinion Facilitator for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust and want to thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. May I extend my sympathy to you and your family on the death of your father at this most very difficult time. We understand that the restrictions because of the COVID pandemic are very challenging for families when a bereavement occurs, and we really appreciate that in the midst of your grief, you have taken the time to tell us about the care your father received in Respiratory 2.

We will ensure that your lovely comments are shared with the staff and I know they will be very grateful to receive them and to know that were able to provide support and comfort to you. It was good that you were able to be with your father in his final days and hours, and no doubt this will be a comfort to you in the days and weeks ahead.

I would like you to know that should you or anyone in your family need support in your time of loss that we have a helpline available from 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday: the number is 028 37567990 and the helpline is operated by professionals with knowledge, insight and experience of grief and loss.

Thank you again for telling us about your experience and please feel free to get in touch with us should you need any further support

Best wishes

Christine Armstrong
