"Contact with emergency services"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Fracture Clinic Craigavon Area Hospital / Orthopaedics Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a service user),

In September 2019 I was outside in the evening playing with both my dogs. Unfortunately one of the dogs ran into me and broke my left knee with the force of the impact. It took me over an hour to crawl back into the house and get to my phone. I called for an ambulance that arrived about two hours later. I must say though that during the wait, paramedics had been in touch regularly to assess my status and when it became apparent I was going into ‘shock’ my situation was escalated.

The ambulance crew were fantastic, having to deal with two very large and noisy, protective dogs to get anywhere near me. They went above and beyond, not just looking after me but ensuring the dogs had water in their bowl and were secured before taking me to the ED. I am still receiving regular hospital intervention as my injury heals and have regular visits to CAH. On every occasion I have been moved by the attention and dedication of the staff against the terrible backdrop of working on the frontline of this pandemic. I did not expect the level of follow up care I have received and I am truly grateful to the paramedics and staff at Craigavon.

My only negative comment is that all but one of my face to face physio appointments have been cancelled but I totally understand why and make no complaint. I honestly think all NHS staff deserve formal recognition for their unswerving dedication and commitment to their work. I salute you one and all.

Dear Juicequeen

Thank you for your kind words. Your accident sounds like it was quite an ordeal and I'm glad that our staff in Emergency Ambulance Control were able to provide some reassurance during your wait and that monitoring your condition allowed the response to be appropriately escalated.

I've ensured that the Emergency Control Manager and the Area Manager for Southern are aware of your story. I'm sure the crew that attended you will remember the dogs and have probably been wondering how you and they are getting on.

I hope your recovery is going well and that the dogs are a bit more careful when they are playing.

Rachel

Good afternoon

Thank you for sharing your experiences in Craigavon Area Hospital. It is so reassuring for the Trust to read that "on every occasion I have been moved by the attention and dedication of the staff". It is so important for our staff to have this feedback especially during these difficult times of working in frontline during Covid. We have shared you story with the relevant department within the Trust.

I wish you well in your continued recovery.

Kind regards

Mairead Casey
