"Mental health treatment"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Adult Mental Health Services

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with a mental health illness 25 years ago. The staff were fine up until I told them my neighbour was antisocial and that my ex-partner hit me - they said it was my imagination and told me to ignore it. It wasn't until I said I have a citation that they believed me, but I said they were not helping me so I asked them to leave and not to see me again. Last February i was dismissed, and the past year has been I would say a relief from not talking to them and I'm healing through my own ways and looking up information to help myself.  I am better now than I've been the last 25 years and much more stable than I was. I would say due to their ignorance and invalidation its been a lot better since last year.  I wish they would have listened and heard me, that would have been a help. Thanks for listening.

Dear Compo

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of being referred to the Adult Mental Health Team. It is disappointing to hear that you felt the staff didn't take on board your thoughts and feelings and take the time to listen to you properly. I will ensure that your post is shared with the team to allow them to reflect on your comments and improve services to patients. On a positive note, I am pleased that you now feel better and able to cope without further intervention. Thanks again for sharing your comments and wishing you best wishes for the future.

Lesley

Update posted by compo (the patient)

Thankyou for replying to my post.

As to update you on my position at the moment I am going to the sheriff court in march to give evidence and from then I will be putting all of this behind me. I would hope that the staff at the resource centre will reflect on the way they handled my situation and I would strongly advise them that if they are serious about helping anyone they should not only be listening but also to be more aware of the way they communicate to a patient as that would have been more of a help in the first place.

As to moving forward, I would appreciate the staff not to contact me at all as my experience talking to them was positive at first but not on the later interactions so just to end with my story is that I am moving towards looking to the future and not having these negative experiences dictate my moaning on which is what im trying to do and eventually will with a bit of work and with keeping in mind that I tried with them.

So to end I will say this listening and then validation of people experiences is the first step towards recovering from them that would be my advice and I hope is is heard and made to improve on that. thankyou.
