"Thank you to Inclusion Thurrock"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as the patient),

I’ve been suffering with anxiety (mainly social) for as long as I can remember, but last year it got a lot worse so I reached out to Inclusion Thurrock to get some support. I was referred onto Sam to have regular CBT sessions. Sam has been brilliant, she made me feel at ease every time we spoke and is really friendly. I’m really grateful for how much she has helped and supported me throughout and she has definitely made a difference for me. Thank you Sam and all at Inclusion Thurrock for the best service.

Dear ep2021,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Social Anxiety can be extremely hard to manage at the best of times, however through lockdown many of us may have been thrust into social situations more often than usual through our living situations.

I can see you have mentioned that you have experienced these anxieties for a long time. This is a common experience with most anxieties, Social anxiety being no exception. We often develop strategies or behaviours that seem to help us manage the anxiety, whether these are techniques for staying in conversation when it is uncomfortable, or it is avoiding them altogether.

Mostly, we notice that whilst these behaviours can seem helpful in the short-term (and may help to relieve some symptoms of anxiety), they tend to become unhelpful in the long-term, they reinforce the idea that these situations should provoke anxiety and can make them more frightening in the future.

What is clear from your message is the positive relationship you had with your therapist, Sam. I am sure she will be so pleased to hear how well you are doing! Not only is this good relationship important with social anxiety, it also suggests you have done very well in being able to speak about your experiences to somebody, which can be a massive step.

I hope you are able to keep up your good work for the future and wish you all the best!

Kind regards,

Adam
